PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for determining the edge of a digital image are provided to accurately determine the edge in which each pixel belongs by generating a binary mask using the average of brightness deviation between each pixel of a digital image and a surrounding pixel. CONSTITUTION: A brightness deviation average producer(11) produces the average of an absolute value of brightness deviation between each pixel of an input image and surrounding pixels. A brightness deviation average histogram producer(12) produces the histogram about the brightness deviation average of the input image. A brightness deviation average cumulative distribution producer(13) produces the cumulative distribution of the brightness deviation average value. A binary mask generator(14) generates a binary mask.
