RANGING METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ALLOCATING UPLINK RESOURCE IN BROADBAND WIRELESS COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

PURPOSE: A ranging method for allocating an uplink resource in a broad band wireless communications system and an apparatus thereof are provided to define a new ranging code by transmitting a periodic ranging code or a bandwidth request code through an initial ranging region. CONSTITUTION: First ranging codes are corresponded to a first region and second ranging codes are corresponded to a second region. The first ranging codes and the second ranging codes are identified from an UCD(Uplink Channel Descriptor). One ranging code is selected from second ranging codes which are corresponded to the second region. A selected ranging code is mapped in the first region. A mapped ranging code is transmitted to a base station. An upward link resource is allocated from the base station. The first ranging codes include at least one of initial ranging codes and hand-over ranging codes. The second ranging codes include at least one of periodic ranging codes and bandwidth request codes.
