The device has a plastic seal (10) that is in the form of a plastic washer (11) whose clipping part (12) is forcibly engaged in a central orifice of a centering ring (3). The part has an outer peripheral groove (15) to receive and maintain an inner periphery (3A) of the ring during assembly of the seal on the ring, such that the seal is held on a gearbox between gearbox and vehicle assembly plants, and the ring is moved to its initial position to assure its function of centering of a mechanical transmission shaft during removal of the seal to assemble the shaft on the gearbox. An independent claim is also included for a method for protecting an output of a gearbox before assembly of the gearbox on a vehicle.
