<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for a tire tread having excellent grip performance, as well as suppressing groove cracking and chipping of blocks by improving elongation at break and further having low rolling resistance, and to provide a pneumatic tire using the composition. <P>SOLUTION: This rubber composition for a tire tread is formulated with 5-50 pts.mass carbon black with 80-140 m<SP POS="POST">2</SP>/g N<SB POS="POST">2</SB>SA and ≥100 cm<SP POS="POST">3</SP>/100 g DBP absorption amount, 30-90 pts.mass silica, 1-10 pts.mass thermosetting resin and 0.5-15 pts.mass PMMM (hexamethylolmelamine pentamethyl ether) to 100 pts.mass diene-based rubber containing at least 40 pts.mass SBR having -25°C to -60°C Tg, where the total amount of carbon black and silica is 40-120 pts.mass.
