摘要 A method and apparatus for molding a high-strength, non-metallic fiber-reinforced threaded fastener (50), such as a bolt or the like. A non-metallic preform (40) (e.g., a solid rod) having longitudinally-extending fibers (56) running therethrough is located in a mold (14, 16). A mold insert (22) is positioned at the top of the mold, and a penetrator (34) having a pointed tip (36) is located at the bottom of the mold. Upper and lower press plates ( 42, 44) are closed against the mold insert (22) and the penetrator (34). Accordingly, the upper press plate (42) moves the mold insert (22) against the top of the preform (40) in the mold (14, 16) to form the bolt head (52). The lower press plate (44) moves the penetrator (34) against the bottom of the preform (40), whereby the penetrator is embedded therewithin. By virtue of the embedded preform, the molded fastener (50) will have axially-extending fibers (56) which are compressed into the threads and run in substantially parallel alignment to better resist failure under load conditions.
