The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for controlling allocation of IP addresses. The method includes the following steps: a local end media gateway controller (MGC) obtains an indication message from a local end media gateway (MGW), wherein the indication message is used for indicating that the local end MGW can not match a local end first IP address corresponding to the version type of the obtained peer end first IP address allocated by the peer end MGW; the local end MGC indicates the peer end MGW through the peer end MGC to allocate a peer end second IP address for this calling, so that the local end MGW can match a local end second IP address corresponding to the version type of the peer end second IP address.
