<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a square copper wire of which a difference in thermal expansion that occurs between a silicon wafer and a copper wire and stress are relaxed, and to provide an excellent square copper wire for a solar cell of which, by connecting the silicon wafer with the square copper wire, occurrence of crack is prevented on the silicon wafer for an extended period, for improved power generation efficiency and longer life. <P>SOLUTION: The square copper wire is provided in which a copper strand whose volume resistivity is 2.5 μΩ cm or less and which has been annealed at 300-800°C is applied with cold rolling or cold drawing process of work efficiency 5-15%. Otherwise, the square copper wire in which the copper strand whose volume resistance is 2.5 μΩ cm or less and which has been annealed at 300-800°C is applied with cold rolling or cold drawing process at work efficiency 0-15%, and after that, expansion of 0.5-1% is applied.
