The method involves assigning a transmission control device (6) to an automatic and/or automated gear box (2) for controlling and/or regulating operation of the box. An engine control device is assigned to a drive unit (1) for regulating and/or controlling operation of an internal combustion engine. A stable running of the engine is made based on the commands of operating modes of a drive train of an engine control device (5) for decreasing and increasing engine idle rotation speed of an unstressed engine by the transmission control device.
