The device (1) has a hand brake lever (2) pivotably supported at a base (3), and a retainer (6) comprising locking segments (7) and a lock pawl (8), where the lock pawl and another lock pawl (9) have pawl teeth (14, 15). The lock pawls and the locking segments are arranged to each other such that the locking segments are brought in engagement with the lock pawls in an operated position of the hand brake lever, where position of the pawl tooth of the former lock pawl is different from position of the pawl tooth of the latter lock pawl with respect to the teeth and gaps of the locking segments. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining a parking brake of a vehicle.
