The method involves providing a slug for a contact roll (1) of a vacuum switching pipe. A slot (2) is milled in the contact roll to reduce eddy currents in the contact roll. An outer rim of the contact roll is produced at a junction of an edge of the slot by milling the junction to a curve-shaped part (5). Radius of the curve-shaped part is equal to width of the slot. An edge area (6) and an interior region (7) are defined for the contact roll, where thickness of the contact roll in the interior region is less than that of the contact roll in the edge area.
