<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent damage or the like of a reverse stage gear that may be produced due to an insufficient meshing amount of the reverse stage gear, in a manual transmission having the sliding type reverse stage gear. <P>SOLUTION: If a meshing amount W of a reverse idler gear with respect to a reverse drive gear or a reverse driven gear detected on the basis of an output signal of a fork shaft position sensor is smaller than a threshold G (ST1:YES), after comparison with a case where the meshing amount W is equal to or more than the threshold G, produced torque of an engine is suppressed (ST3), and warning display is performed (ST4).
