The starting device (10) has an injection element (12) for supplying the fuel in a combustion chamber (5) of an internal combustion engine. A fuel collecting container (7) is provided for fuel and a conveying unit (13) is provided for conveying the fuel to the injection element. An ignition unit (15) is provided for igniting the fuel in the combustion chamber. A detecting unit (11) is provided for detecting the position of a piston (2) in the combustion chamber. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a starting device.
