<p>The present invention discloses a method for generating a data block identifier. The method includes: a client generates a data block identifier when a data block is created. The present invention also discloses a system for generating a data block identifier. The system includes a data server and a metadata server; the system also includes a client which generates a data block identifier when a data block is created. By using the method and system of the invention, the load of the metadata server can be reduced.</p>
