A method and a device for Passive Optical Network (PON) extending, which include that obtaining distances of a working path and a protection path between an extender device and optical line terminal (OLT); comparing the distances of the working path and protection path, obtaining a shorter distance path and a longer distance path; performing delay T on the data of the shorter distance path in the extender device to make the time taken by the data through the shorter distance path and the longer distance path same. The present invention has better flexibility for adjusting the working path and protection path in the PON system. XPON network can be used normally when a differential distance between Optical Network Unit (ONU) and OLT is more than 20km during XPON extending.
