A method for masking a gap between a closure panel 12 and a surround 13 comprises the mask 14 being located within the gap 11 and protruding therefrom so as to overlie the panel edge 12a such that the mask defines a space 15 tapering towards the panel edge, so that during painting, paint is feathered towards the edge. A masking tape adapted for use in this method is also disclosed. Ideally the masking tape is located between a vehicle door / window and vehicle body during spraying of the primer or paint, but removed for over-painting. Ideally, no adhesive strip is provided on the masking tape, the masking tape being pushed into the slot / gap and being held by being `pinched' between the door and body. Preferably the tape comprises two sections connected by a web 14c, made by cold-welding a super-absorbent polymer foam strip. The sections may be circular, and are preferably wider than the gap.
