A method of controlling a brushless motor in which a winding of the motor is excited until current in the winding exceeds a threshold, and continuing to excite the winding for an overrun period. The length of the overrun period is defined by a waveform that varies periodically with time. The waveform may be defined so that the waveform of current drawn from the power supply approaches a sinusoid, and a high power factor may be achieved without a PFC or high-capacitance do link capacitor. |
