A stator comprising a plurality of stator elements, each stator element 7,8 for example comprising a C shaped core and coils 11,12 wound about the core. At least one coil of at least one stator element is wound at angle such that the coil is sheared towards an adjacent stator element so as to reduce magnetic flux leakage between the two elements. As shown in the prior art un-sheered coil arrangement (fig 2), leakage occurs in areas 43 and 44 which is prevented in the sheered arrangement (fig 3) and any leakage from the more remote portion of the core 45 uncovered by the sheer is minimal. The rotor may be a reluctance or permanent magnet type. Any number of stator elements may be arranged about the rotor. |
