In order to provide a service, for example a tax refund service, an apparatus is responsive to a mobile communications device identifier for a mobile communications device of a user to verify whether the mobile communications device identifier is associated with a registration for the service, and, in the event that the mobile communications device identifier is registered with the service, to determine predetermined user information associated with the mobile communications device identifier for providing the service. May be used for duty free purchases at point of sale (POS) terminals which may read the mobile communications device identifier using a near field communications (NFC) interface or a WiFi basestation. The user may be prompted to use the tax refund service based upon physical location (detected by GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth etc), or proximity to a point of exit from a territory such as at airport departures.
