A method and system for locating the position of target wood sections in wood pieces is disclosed. The system comprises: a lighting system, at least one camera, and a processing unit. The lighting system illuminates first and second extremities of each wood piece at a first angle with a first colour, and illuminates the first and the second extremities of each wood piece at a second angle with a second colour, different from the first colour. The camera takes images of the first and the second extremities of each wood piece illuminated by the lighting system. The processing unit: i) receives, from the camera, contrasted images of the first and second extremities of each wood piece; ii) locates and sizes, from the images, a target wood section in each extremity; and iii) determines, from the locating and sizing of the target wood section in each extremity, the location and size of the target wood section along the length of the wood piece between the extremities.
