PRODUCTION OF A REFINERY FEEDSTOCK FROM SOAPS PRODUCED DURING A CHEMICAL PULPING PROCESS

Disclosed is a process for preparing a refinery feedstock from black liquor soap obtained from a chemical pulp mill comprising: (a) separating black liquor soap from pulping liquor produced in a chemical pulp mill and placing the black liquor soap in a vessel; (b) mixing the black liquor soap in the vessel with a quantity of alcohol (such as methanol, ethanol or isopropanol) sufficient to esterify resin and fatty acids in the black liquor soap; and(c) mixing the product resulting from step (b) in the vessel with a quantity of acid (such as sulfuric acid, formic acid or hydrochloric acid for reducing the pH of the mixture to about 2) sufficient to remove sodium ion from the black liquor soap;(d) separating solids from the product of step (c); and(e) refining the product of step (d) to produce a refinery feed stock, wherein the solids from the product of step (c) are filtered and the product of step (d) is distilled to reclaim methanol or obtain biodiesel or sterols and related alcohols.
