PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a workpiece type discriminating device and a workpiece type discriminating method capable of calculating a position of a workpiece and identifying a type thereof in short time for sorting out them in a post-process even in a case of transporting a variety of workpieces in a random postural arrangement on the same line.

SOLUTION: A method to discriminate a vehicle model of a workpiece W with a workpiece type discriminating device 10 comprises: a model creation step (step S11); a posture measurement data creation step (step S12); a vehicle mode discrimination data creation step (step S13); an imaging step (S14); a workpiece position calculation step (S15); a data limiting step (S16); a vehicle model discrimination step (step S17); and a taking out step (step S18).
