<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power converter having a discharge function of a smoothness capacitor which doesn't discharge the smoothness capacitor during power conversion. <P>SOLUTION: A motor controller 1 comprises an inverter circuit 10, a smoothness capacitor 11, power conversion drive circuits 120-125, a power conversion power circuit 13, and discharge drive circuits 140-141. The inverter circuit 10 comprises switching circuits 100-102 consisted of two IGBTs which are serially connected. The power conversion drive circuits 120-125 supply an output voltage for the power conversion power circuit 13 to drive the switching circuits 100-102 for power conversion. When the output voltage of the power conversion power circuit 13 is a threshold value or less, the discharge drive circuits 140-141 turn on the IGBT 100a and 100b which constitute the switching circuit 100 simultaneously to discharge the smoothness capacitor 11.
