PURPOSE: A composition containing Gymnaster koraiensis extract, fraction thereof, or gymnasterkoreayne B is provided to prevent alcoholic liver damage and to improve liver condition. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for protecting liver contains Gymnaster koraiensis extract as an active ingredient. The extract is isolated using water, alcohol of C1-C4, or mixture solvent thereof. A pharmaceutical composition for protecting liver contains Gymnaster koraiensis fraction as an active ingredient. The fraction is prepared from the Gymnaster koraiensis extract using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water in order. A pharmaceutical composition for protecting liver also contains gymnasterkoreayne B of chemical formula 1 as an active ingredient.
