<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the most suitable conversion formula corresponding to real image data cannot be automatically applied. <P>SOLUTION: Brightness "y" is calculated for a pixel of image data as subtraction is carried out at a step S102, and either an upper or lower end that goes inward by a predetermined rate of distribution is regarded as the end of brightness distribution (step S116), whereby it is made possible to obtain a parameter "a" corresponding to a rate of expansion within a range where the brightness can be reproduced and a parameter "b" corresponding to an offset amount.
