<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a load on a printing mechanism when an error occurs in a code in which image data is encoded using a variable-length code. <P>SOLUTION: A decoding section decodes code data in which image data is encoded using a variable-length code, and counts the number of pixels of the decoded image data in one line. If the counted number of pixels differs from the number of pixels predetermined as the number of pixels in one line, a semantics error of the code data is detected. In addition, if a code length of the decoded code data in one page differs from a code length predetermined as a code length thereof in one page, a semantics error of the code data is detected. Furthermore, if variable-length code to decode does not exist in a code table, a syntax error of the code data is detected. When any error is detected, a CPU for controlling the entire system is interrupted by an outputted error signal.
