An air conditioner and a method for controlling the same are disclosed. The air conditioner includes an indoor unit (10), an outdoor unit (40), a refrigerant circulation loop connected with the indoor unit (10) and the outdoor unit (40) and having a gas pipeline and a liquid pipeline, a controller disposed within the indoor unit (10), and a refrigerant detector connected electrically with the controller. The refrigerant remaining in the indoor unit (10) of the air conditioner can be reduced or prevented so as to improve security of the air conditioner according to the application.
