The present invention discloses a method and main device for controlling a backup device, and a backup device. The method includes: obtaining load quantity of the main device and work modes of the backup device; when the load quantity is less than a first threshold and the backup device is not in a stand-by work mode, sending power turnoff information to the backup device to make the backup device enter the stand-by work mode. The main device includes a first processor and a second processor. The backup device includes a third processor and a forth processor. When the load quantity is less than the first threshold and the backup device is not in a stand-by work mode, by sending the power turnoff information to the backup device to make the backup device enter the stand-by work mode, the method, main device and backup device of the embodiments of the invention can consequently reduce energy consumption of the backup device on the basis of satisfying requirements of system reliability.
