DEVICE FOR PROTECTING OCCUPANT, AND METHOD FOR THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an occupant protection device that improves the safety of occupants when colliding with a preceding vehicle and a following vehicle in different timings each other, and to provide a method thereof.

SOLUTION: The occupant protection device protects occupants from each impact that is caused by collisions with the preceding vehicle and the following vehicle of one's own vehicle. The occupant protection device includes: a frontal time to collision calculating device for calculating a margin time as a frontal time to collision that is a time before the one's own vehicle collides with the preceding vehicle; a rear time to collision calculating device for calculating a margin time as a rear time to collision that is a time before the one's own vehicle collides with the following vehicle; an occupant protection means for protecting occupants in the one's own vehicle; and an actuation controlling device for relatively advancing an actuation timing of the occupant protecting means when the frontal time to collision and the rear time to collision are different from each other.
