<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface layer material capable of efficiently cutting out goodness of designability presenting a natural feeling of a solid material from natural lumber, capable of effectively using up an end material which is the remainder of the cut-out solid material and is conventionally discarded, and capable of exerting effect equivalent to the goodness of the designability presenting the natural feeling of the original solid material, and to provide a building material using the same. <P>SOLUTION: This surface layer material includes: a first thin solid board 2 consisting of one piece of lumber in the long direction; and a second thin solid board 3 made of the same tree kind as the first thin solid board 2, and made by collecting a plurality of collection pieces in the short direction and the long direction of the first thin solid board 2.
