<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus that appropriately determines a distance between media in a case where a plurality of media are transported sequentially and an image of each medium being transported is read. <P>SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus includes: first transporting devices 10 and 11 that sequentially send each of a plurality of media set in a tray 2 out in a transport direction while being driven; a second transporting device 21 that is positioned downstream from the first transporting devices 10 and 11 in the transport direction and transports a medium sent out by the first transporting devices 10 and 11 in the transport direction; and an imaging device 31a that is positioned downstream from the second transporting device 21 in the transport direction and captures an image of a medium being transported so as to generate image data. When a medium is detected based on image data generated by the imaging device while a plurality of media are being transported sequentially by the first transporting devices 10 and 11 and the second transporting device 21, the first transporting device 10 stops being driven before the first transporting device 10 starts to transport a medium following the medium that has been detected, that is, the detected medium.
