The invention relates to a method and a computer system for transmitting data over a network using a sliding window protocol, e.g. TCP, and with the aim of avoiding congestion. The sliding window is utilized at least in a congestion avoidance phase and in a retransmit phase. According to the invention, the method and system are configured to execute the steps of calculating the round trip times (RTT) of transmitted segments and of modifying the size of a sending window based on the calculated RTT, preferably based on the calculated RTT and its rate of change. Further according to the invention, the window size modifications are not dependent on any transmission rates, in particular during the congestion avoidance phase. |
