Seismic data (e.g. P-wave, S-wave data) is recorded at a plurality of sensors. A trial location for the origin of the seismic event is selected. Arrival times of seismic waves at the sensors are calculated using a velocity model. The sensor having the minimum travel time from the trial location is identified. The relative arrival times for the other sensors are calculated with respect to the minimum travel time, and the data for these sensors is time shifting by an amount corresponding to the relative arrival. The time-shifted data from all the sensors is combined. An optimum response pattern (e.g. a peak) is identified in the combined data set. The method is repeated for further trial locations, and the location with the maximum optimum response pattern is identified as the best fit for the location of the seismic event. The actual arrival times of seismic waves can be determined by identifying the onset time of the optimum response pattern. The method may be used to identify noise in a seismic signal. |
