Disclosed is an imaging apparatus provided with: a light irradiation means which irradiates a target area with light; a differential image generation means which generates a differential image of a first image which was taken in synchronisation with the irradiation period during which the light irradiation means irradiates the aforementioned light and a second image which was taken outside the irradiation period; a transmittance estimation means which estimates the transmittance of an object in the aforementioned target area to the aforementioned light; and a light exposure adjustment means which adjusts the light exposure on the basis of the estimation result from the transmittance estimation means so that the exposure in the aforementioned differential image is within a predetermined optimal range. The transmittance estimation means estimates the transmittance of the aforementioned object from at least one image among the aforementioned first image, the aforementioned second image, and the aforementioned differential image.
