<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a image scanner that is simple in structure and capable of reading a manuscript with accuracy and an image forming apparatus capable of stably obtaining high quality images. <P>SOLUTION: An image scanner comprises: a shaft (a guide member) 34 disposed parallel to the sub-scanning direction of a manuscript; an optical carriage 32 which moves on a guide rail 36 along the shaft 34 to scan the manuscript; a driving unit 33 for moving the optical carriage 32 in the sub-scanning direction; and a connection portion 41 for connecting the driving unit 33 (a timing belt 38) with the optical carriage 32.
