<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a retardation substrate for achieving a semi-transmissive liquid crystal display device having excellent display performance. <P>SOLUTION: The method includes formation of a solidified liquid crystal layer on a light transmissive plane. The formation of the solidified liquid crystal layer includes: a film formation step to form, on the plane, a liquid crystal material layer in which mesogens of a photopolymerizable or photo-crosslinkable thermotropic liquid crystal compound are oriented; a first exposure step to irradiate a first area and a second area of the liquid crystal material layer with light; a second exposure step to irradiate a third area and the second area of the liquid crystal material layer with light under more intense conditions than the first exposure step; a development step to heat the liquid crystal material layer to a temperature at which the mesogens of the liquid crystal compound exhibit an isotropic phase to lower the degree of orientation of the mesogens in the first area and the second area; and a fixation step to polymerize and/or cross-link the unreacted liquid crystal compound while keeping the degree of orientation being lowered to obtain the third area having a prescribed birefringence and obtain the first and the second areas smaller than the third area and having different birefringence from each other. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
