PURPOSE: A semiconductor light emitting device and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to increase light extraction efficiency by sending light emitted from an active area to the outside through an uneven part formed on a semiconductor layer. CONSTITUTION: A light emitting structure(120) is formed on a substrate(110) and includes a first conductive type semiconductor layer(121), an active layer(122), and a second conductive semiconductor layer(123). A pattern(130) is formed by partially etching a second conductive semiconductor layer. The pattern includes a plurality of convex units. A second conductive type electrode(123a) electrically connected to the second conductive semiconductor layer is formed on the upper side of the pattern.
