PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely transfer a toner image on a fixed predetermined position (registration position) of a transfer material even when using a transfer roller having a recessed part.

SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus comprises: an intermediate transfer belt carrying an image that is a latent image exposed in a exposure section developed by using a liquid developer; a secondary transfer roller that has a recessed part on a peripheral surface thereof and brings a transfer material into pressure contact with the intermediate transfer belt so as to transfer the image carried by the intermediate transfer belt on the transfer material by a secondary transfer nip; a gate roller transporting the transfer material to the secondary transfer nip; and a mechanical control section 33a that controls a starting timing of a formation of the latent image on a latent image carrier by the exposure section based on a first signal of the recessed part output from an encoder 28 and controls a starting timing of a transportation of the transfer material by the gate roller based on a second signal output from the encoder 28 after the first signal is output.
