<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent wear and seizure of contact surfaces between a plunger and a plunger barrel by improving durability of the plunger without changing fuel injection characteristics of a prior fuel injection pump. <P>SOLUTION: In the fuel injection pump which includes a plunger 31 moving up and down by power transmitted from a crankshaft and a plunger barrel 32 liftably accommodating the plunger 31, and in which a space demarcated by an upper surface of the plunger 31 and an inner circumferential surface of the plunger barrel 32 constitutes a compression chamber 32a for pressurizing fuel, a groove 31c for decompressing the compression chamber 32a is formed on an outer circumference of the plunger 31 at a vertical intermediate part.
