The device has a temperature sensor (34) that measures the temperature of a heat transfer medium in a section (20a) of a return line (20). A branch device (22) is formed such that it is switched in an operating condition or another operating condition in dependence of measurement results. The branch device is switched in one of the two operating conditions, if the difference between the measures temperatures falls below a pre-determined value. An independent claim is also included for a heating system, which has a heat source.
