<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for and a method of fully automatically and rapidly scanning and digitizing an entire microscope sample, using a computer controlled microscope slide scanner for composing image strips obtained by continuous scanning of the sample into a single continuous digital image. <P>SOLUTION: An optical microscope system 10 includes a microscope slide scanner 11. All of the microscope slide scanners 11 have a primary connection to a network 42. A preferred sample 12 is a microscope slide.
