The piston (2) has a piston ring (8) that is formed as gas-tight piston ring without leakage and is removed from a work space (5). An expansion area (17) is provided between piston rings of piston ring packets (9) for additional expansion of arrived leakage gas, where the piston rings are arranged one behind another. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a reciprocating internal combustion engine.
