The device has a stop bolt (20) brought from a countersink position, in which movement of a coffin carriage is not limited, into a blocked position, in which movement of the carriage is blocked, by translation transverse to a surface of a loading area of a motor vehicle. The stop bolt is displaceably supported in a base body (10), and a locking mechanism fixes the stop bolt in the countersink position. The locking mechanism has a stop valve (34) movable between released and locked positions transverse to a movement direction of the stop bolt. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle comprising a luggage compartment.
