The invention is directed to a technique for realtime processing of photographed pictures with less memory requirements. An image compressor (3) compresses unit images (91), (92), and so on of a given source picture (90) individually. By converting reference data of compressed unit images (92) and so on, the image compressor (3) creates compressed data (90a) of the source picture (90). From the image compressor (3), a reference parameter generator (4) receives original reference data corresponding to each unit image (92) and so on having undergone the reference data conversion. An image decompressor (5) retrieves a plurality of compressed unit images (91), (92a), and so on in an order suitable for a specified image editing operation. The image processor (6) outputs the decompressed unit images after editing them to effect the specified image editing operation.
