The generative device comprises a frame (1), where an upper section of the frame encloses a construction area (6), a support (5) arranged in the frame, a coater for applying a layer of powder material on the support or on a previously applied layer of powder material in the construction area, a solidification apparatus, and a construction area limiting device. The support is vertically movable below the construction area by a lifting mechanism (4). The solidification apparatus is useful for the selective solidification of the powder material located construction areas. The coater has a mechanical insert that limits the application of the powder material to less than the maximum width of the building field and/or the construction area limiting device, which limits the movement of the coater to less than the maximum length of the construction area, so that a reduced construction area is defined. The mechanical insert: has an opening, where the width of the opening in the direction of maximum width of the construction area is less than the maximum width of the maximum construction area; and is interchangeable at the coater.
