[Class 53] The container of a standard cell consists of a tubular glass vessel 1 having two legs 2, 3 which may be joined by a glass flange 4 which conducts heat sufficiently to keep the two legs at the same temperature. One of the legs 3 contains cadmium amalgam, the other leg containing mercury beneath a paste of mercurous sulphate, the materials being kept in place by perforated corks 12, 13, which may be surrounded and covered with linen. A solution 11 of cadmium sulphate is poured into the tube which is then sealed at 15. The cell terminals are formed by platinum wires 5, 6 sealed into the legs. |
