A grinding and compacting unit, preferably but not exclusively for marine use and capable of grinding / cutting a wide variety of waste materials (such as paper, plastics, glass and organic waste) comprises a grinder / cutter integrated within the upper region of a framework 1 and having a motorised reducer 2 with two low speed counter-rotating axles 3 (with associated cutting / grinding blades). Waste to be grinded is fed in to the unit via hopper 4. A piston controlled plate compactor is positioned within a lower region of the framework 1 and comprises a compacting container 8, with closures 10. Compacting is performed by a jointed plate (12, Fig 4) and is activated by head (14) of a cylinder (15). The unit is electrically operated and comprises a control panel 5. When necessary, monitoring means give preference to compactor operation over grinding means. The unit is described as having preferential use aboard ships and boats and as working in accordance with current marine conventions and treaties.
