Lathes.-In a lathe or other automatic machine tool having independently movable carriages actuated by hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical or other means, the carriage movements are controlled by means of a set of parallel sliding members which are actuated by the machine e carriages either directly or from some part of the carriage-actuating gearing. The lathe headstock is driven from a pulley 1 and the chuck 2 is actuated from a hydraulic cylinder 3 controlled from a valve-box 6 fitted with actuating-pedals 7, 8. A hydraulic pump P is driven by a belt 16 and is connected by a belt J with a pump 18 supplying fluid to the work. The hydraulic pump is connected to the various carriageactuating cylinders by pipes 19. The bed carries a longitudinal carriage D actuated by a cylinder 23 moving over a stationary piston 21. The carriage carries a screw 24 having adjustable abutments 26, 27 which coact with a fixed member 25 to limit the movement. The carriage D also carries a member 28 fitted with tappets 29, 30. An upper carriage E angularly adjustable upon the carriage D is actuated from a hydraulic cylinder 36 whose piston rod carries a rack engaging a pinion 33 connected by a. vertical shaft H to the operating- pinion 31. An adjustable stop device 42 - - 44 is provided to limit the stroke of the carriage E. The rack 34 is fixed to a control member 41 carrying tappets 45, 46. A third carriage F is operated by a cylinder controlled by a tappet 6 engaging a finger on the controlling valve. This carriage may be replaced by a compound carriage such as D, E. In operation, the carriage being in the position shown in Fig. 1, pressure is admitted to the cylinder 23 thus moving the carriage D towards the headstock until one of the tappets on the member 28 engages a finger 53 in the valve box 50 to stop the carriage D. A tappet on the member 41. at a predetermined point engages a finger 52 to cause fluid to be admitted to the cylinder 36 to start the carriage E, and the member 41 then moves independently of the member 28 until a tappet engages the finger 51 to stop the carriage E while a second tappet engages the finger 53 to restart the carriage D. The order and duration of the carriage movements may be modified according to the work to be performed and changes in the speed of either carriage may also be effected by suitable arrangement of the valve and tappet mechanism. In a modification, the sliding control members 28, 41 may be replaced by circular concentric members carrying the controlling tappets. One or both of the sliding members may carry tappets which act to return the carriages to their starting point and to initiate a fresh cycle, of movements. |
