PURPOSE: An automatic focus controlling method and an apparatus thereof are provided to reduce an auto focus controlling time by reducing the number of search steps. CONSTITUTION: An automatic focus controlling apparatus(130) comprises a first searching part(132), a second searching part(134), and a lens controlling part(136). The first searching part determines the initial position of a search point, in which the edge value measured from an image data recorded by an image sensor is maximum, as an optimal position when a lens is positioned in the initial position of preset search points. The second searching part uses the optimal position for lens which is determined by the first searching part and updates the positions of the search points. An updated position is determined as the optimal position for the lens if the edge value measured from the image data recorded by the image sensor is greater than the edge value in a predetermined optimal position when the lens is placed in the updated position. The lens controlling part generates and transmits the initial positions of the search points which are fixed in the first searching part, and the position of the search points which are updated in the second searching part, and a lens position controlling signal in which the lens is successively carried to the final optimal position for the lens. |
