The invention relates to an extendable, bellows-free, protective covering (10), particularly for machine tools, comprising elongated protective elements (14), which extend transversal to the longitudinal direction of the protective covering (10) and which overlap one another at least in part and slide on one another. The design is such that the protective elements (14) are provided in the form of separate U-shaped members, are parallelly arranged and point with their open sides in the longitudinal direction (12) of the protective covering (10) so that adjacent protective elements (14) nest inside one another and can, in a manner that is transversal to their own longitudinal direction, be telescopically displaced relative to one another in the longitudinal direction (12) of the protective covering (10). In addition, resilient coupling members cushion adjacent protective elements (14) from one another in the longitudinal direction (12) of the protective covering (10). The resilient coupling members (16) can be provided in the form of or built in as pressing elements, tractive elements or as combined pressing/tractive elements. When using the coupling members (16) as tractive elements, they join adjacent protective elements (14) to one another. When used as pressing elements, they can join adjacent protective elements (14) to one another, but this is not vitally necessary. The coupling members (16) are preferably provided in the form of zigzag-bent members made of spring band steel, which pass through a number of protective elements (14) and which can extend over the entire length of the protective covering (10). |
