A two-stroke cycle engine 11 has a piston cylinder 13 and a piston cylinder 14. The piston cylinder 14 has an intermediate piston cylinder head 32 disposed transversely across the interior of the piston cylinder 14. The piston 13 has a lower portion 18 and at least one upright extension member 66 extending upwardly from the lower portion 59. The upright extension member 66 extends upwardly into the upper portion of the piston cylinder 16 through a gap between the intermediate piston cylinder head 32 and the piston cylinder wall 22. The disposition of the piston within the piston cylinder defines an upper piston cylinder chamber 70, an intermediate piston cylinder chamber 72 and a lower chamber 62.
